Research

The research activities include medium- and long-term projects as well as dissertations. One emphasis lies on the innovation and development of methodological concepts and methods. Film analysis (Flicker), ethnographic filming (Miko), participatory photo-interview (Kolb) and visual segment analysis  (Breckner) have all evolved from long-lasting experience gained in various projects. The other outcome is a steadily growing number of empirical studies. Despite being dedicated to a huge variety of problems and fields, they share a focus on social, societal or cultural issues, for which visual dimensions are relevant or even constitutive. Subject of research are (amongst others): gender representation in advertisement, motion picture, politics and fashion; image communication and image practices in social networks; migration and images; poverty in pictures.
