Mag. Dr. Bettina Kolb

Bettina Kolb is a lecturer at the Department of Sociology at the University of Vienna and conducts research in non-university related projects. Her research, teaching and publication focus in the visual social sciences lies on

  • visual survey methods: photo-interview and photo voice.
  • visual methods for participation in inter- and trans-disciplinary research
  • cultural assets and public space
  • health promotion
  • development assistance and poverty research

Current projects:

  • Visual methods in SYNCITY-Synergetic Cities for Europe - Towards an integrated and participatory neighbourhood planning and a coordinated stakeholder integration as a precondition for desirable and sustainable urban development

Completed projects:

  • Photo-interviews in Vietnam und Mexico in the poverty research project NO POOR (Reserach topic: The impact of public aid on poverty), which were employed as a participatory method in order to direct the perspective of participants in aid projects towards current and future life prospects
  • Photo-interviews in Islamic neighborhoods within the EU Projekt "HAMMAM - Hammam, Aspects and Multidisciplinary Methods of Analysis for the Mediterranean Region" (completed in 2008; 6th Framework Programme, Specific Targeted Research Projects (STREP))
  • Photo-interview in Chinese villages in the EU-China Projekt "SUCCESS - Sustainable Users Concepts for China Engaging Scientific Scenarios" (completed in 2002; 5th Framework Programme, INCO – DEV)
